the flurry of activity since arrival has meant that i have been unable to post. so for the 3 people who actually give a shit, here's what's been happening:
i moved in to my current dorm, 5700 stony island, almost immediately after getting to the city. the flight was long but tolerable, even though i was ill the whole way. tip for flight survival on united airlines: pay full fare and ask for a better seat when checking in, better as in, change to a window or an aisle, and hope the flight is rather empty. that's how i got bumped up to economy plus without actually asking to be bumped up. it was a pretty nice flight from hong kong cos i had this really nice american guy who works at this oil company in singapore who flies the route once a month sitting two seats down at the aisle. but the time did crawl and given my sheer discomfort due to my fever, it was not something i want to repeat soon. but at least i had great legroom.
international orientation was not bad. it gave me time to get stuff done, like a bank account and some forms, and now i'm not tired and jetlagged from the flight. though i wasn't really tired or jetlagged to begin with. met some interesting people too; never in my life have i sat at a table with people from hong kong, thailand, singapore, UK, zimbabwe and swaziland all at the same time. and chicago deepdish pizza is AMAZING. you have 1 slice and you are totally full. and it tastes damn good.
just looked at the time and realised i've got to run. it has been pretty nice so far. americans are really quite nice people. nice in that they don't mind helping you, and they are generally tolerant of our quirks. which is great. makes you wonder why it's so screwed up politically. the coolest part so far was probably when we went to borders bookstore, and these 2 black guys just spontaneously decided to give as a spoken word performance, and i got to see real freestyle rap, a la '8 mile', for real. amazing shit that basically made it clear that i'm not in singapore anymore.
gotta move now. will have more later.
