just came off after a little trip to heeren. felt really really trapped at home and irritated, so i decided to go buy stuff to make myself happy.
the spoils of the day? 五月天 (mayday)'s best of, '知足' ('just my pride') which i am listening to now. mandarin power pop always makes me happy, and it makes me so atas when i listen to pretentious american indie stuff all the time. the other thing i bought was ben folds' 'songs for silverman' special edition which includes a DVD that chronicles the making of the album. have been listening to it for ages now and since it is such an amazingly mature and beautiful piece of work, i decided to actually pay for it. the booklet is great, with a lot of nice photos of taken by ben folds and his wife frally. i think it rocks to be a married musician, cos you have a convenient muse and someone to thank in the liner notes. not to say that's the only reason why someone like ben folds would get married. but it's nice.
listening to the album on my way home made me think about the various albums that at some point or another got me through a rough patch. albums that somehow "saved my life". so here's the top 5 list.
top 5 albums that saved my life:
5: savage garden's self-titled debut, which pulled me through 1998. the first real album i ever bought. rather pathetic, but absolutely true.
4: the eels' daisies of the galaxy, 2002, O-levels and general growing pains.
3: clem snides' soft spot, early 2003, where things were just going wrong fast.
2: the jayhawk's 'rainy day music', at the confusing period just before i enlisted into army and left a whole life behind.
1: wilco's 'summer teeth', late 2003, at a point where i was almost contemplating doing horrible things to myself. one of THE best albums ever.
and right now, it is ben folds who is helping me pass every last day in singapore.
also, i realise i have a love for the very last track on albums.
list of top 5 last tracks, not counting hidden tracks:
5: lighthouse family's 'postcard from heaven' off the the album of the same name
4: oasis' 'champagne supernova', from '(what's the story) morning glory', their best album bar none
3: incubus' 'aqueous transmissions', off their 'morning view' album
2: clem snide's 'every moment', off 'soft spot'
1: the eels' 'p.s. i love you' off 'electro-shock blues'
this rampant list making makes me happy. haha.
things i bought today:
mayday's just my pride best of collection - $21.95
ben folds' songs for silverman special edition - $22.95
cd wallet for 24 discs - $9.95
