i realise that this has been a somewhat cultural quarter. so far i've seen 4 plays, a concert, at least 20 movies and been to 3 museums. and i shall be going for my first classical music concert in years on saturday. somehow i feel a little gratified by the fact that i am finally doing something outside fo class that doesn't involve alcohol or food.
two things to talk about, a movie and a play. the movie being children of men, starring clive owen (closer). interesting concept. the gist is that in the near future, humans become entirely infertile, and that basically leads to the collapse of human civilization. only a very dystopian britain remains. and basically it's just this one guy and a whole bunch of crap that happens to him while he's just trying to live normally in this screwed up world, and he ends up on an adventure of sorts. it has great cinematography, snappy editing, nice script (british humour abound) and basically moves along quite nicely. i like how it's futuristic without shoving it in your face (think minority report - ooh, we spent loads of cash on futurists so we have to make use of what they said), and just how engaging the story is. if you've seen shaun of the dead, you will probably enjoy this in a similar way.
second thing: university theater's production of woyzeck. i think it started off rather iffy-ly, and i was settling in for an uncomfortable hour (crappy seats), but it really picked up after that. the play attempts to be shocking (in a very conscious way), but i suppose it doesn't really live up to it. the acting is pretty good, except i thought they rushed quite a lot of lines that could really have used a little bit more breathing in between and some tiny pauses. set design was nice, made good use of the space i think, and costumes were pretty good except the hat they made the doctor wear which just caused the actor a lot of discomfort. generally a pretty enjoyable hour.
urgh, gotta finish my civ paper.
