and so it is, just like you said it would be

finally, after months of wanting to, i saw 'closer' on thursday. netflix is the greatest invention ever.

it is a great movie. very atmospheric for a stage to screen adaptation. it is actually quite obviously an adaptation though, cos there's a little too much dialogue. it's one of those movies that would make sense even if you closed your eyes throughout and just listened to people talking. except the final revelation, which was really one of very few visual plot points.

the visuals were nice though. it was a very clean movie, very minimal distraction from the action, or more specifically the facial expressions and gestures of the actors, again a very theatre thing. and the people were beautiful in a very surreal way. it's hard to explain, but the characters seemed like conduits for something, like the characters themselves didn't matter as much as the story they tell together.

'the blower's daughter' is also very very appropriate, not lyrically but again atmospherically. there is a certain depressive haze that surrounds the movie, which i guess would be harder to achieve in theatre without the brilliant use of colours achieved in the film. so it's really a good case of film vs stage, and how different effects work better in different mediums. quite interesting interpreting it like that.

but the story is also quite interesting, because in the end not that much happens, and it ends not far from where it begins. the acting was first rate and really makes the movie very engaging.
