so last night i saw clem snide at schubas, which turned out to be one of the best gigs i've ever been at. first the hall: schubas is a terrific venue. nice bartenders/waitresses, decently priced beers on tap (5 dollars for my new favorite easy drinking lager: harp) and the bar area has the best jukebox i've ever seen. then there is the music hall itself. it is tiny, but the acoustics are fantastic. even if you came in late, you'll still be pretty close to the stage, which is sufficiently elevated so that everyone can have a decent view. then the opening act, a solo act that went by the name 'heligoats'. great showman, got the crowd behind him. a very appropriate opening act for clem snide, with a certain apologetic weirdness and clever lyrics. all in all very charming.
then the main event: clem snide itself. it was surreal, really, seeing a band that frequently recurs as my favorite, and i was less than 12 feet away from them. eef just slinked onto stage at 10:15, with the rest of his band and a total lack of fanfare. the crowd became much livelier later on, but at that point, i was wondering whether they knew what they were getting themselves into. the set was great, spanning the entire history of the band. 'something beautiful' is amazing live, and i was so incredibly happy when they played 'fight song melodies'. rounding out the encore with 'i love the unknown' was a great finishing touch.
by the end, i was buzzed from the beer and my ears were ringing ever so slightly, a reminder that i've been at a great gig. great night, despite the rain.
