so oscar nominations are out. and because i feel like procrastinating a little, here's my 2 cents:
the departed was nominated for way more things than it should have been. dreamgirls is tops in terms of number of nominations (i think), which just shows that it's kind of a patchy year. leonardo dicaprio might take best actor, but i would really prefer if will smith. honestly, i think pursuit of happyness was a great movie and it was purely because will smith was just so damn convincing. nothing much to say for supporting actor. i really liked alan arkin in little miss sunshine though. ditto for best actress and best supporting actress. i really want to see the queen soon, and i think babel is also highly overrated. a three hour montage is not a movie. art direction nominations was a little weird i think. cinematography looks like a real tight field, but i'm rooting for children of men because of the innovations they packed in the film. nothing to say about costume design cos i know nothing about it. though if they were going for sheer number of costumes, it would be a tight race between the curse of the golden flower and marie antoinette. i hope either stephen frears or paul greengrass (who?) wins it just to snub scorsese and the guy who directed babel (i cannot type his name. it has like 4 accented letters). oh, and i can't believe they nominated babel for editing, because that movie was twice as long as it could have been. i seriously don't need a montage of the desert every time they brought the action back to that part. so odd to see click get nominated for anything, but i suppose the makeup for that one was quite good. if anything, it tells us that kate beckinsale will still look amazing when she gets old. best picture i have no idea, except i really hope babel doesn't win, because it would just be the second year in a row where a movie with an implausible story and a crappy message wins. that's about it. oh, except that the departed was nominated for best adapted screenplay. if by adapted they mean destroyed, then yes, it will win. and how is borat an adapted screenplay? adapted from sacha baron cohen's weirdest dreams?
well, that's it. those were probably extremely lousy comments/predictions. feel free to disregard all of that.
in other news, i'm tired, and i have a lot of work left. gah. i need to get this week done quick.
