the sun gets passed from tree to tree silently and back to me

having been stuck at one math problem for the last hour and not wanting to keep trying anymore for now, i realised i had been meaning to write about this for the last 2 days. this being the jeff tweedy concert i saw on saturday night.

jeff tweedy, for the uninitiated, is the lead singer of the band wilco, and perhaps one of the most creative songwriters today. well in my opinion anyway. he came to the university of chicago for a concert, so i got to see him live for 10 dollars, which is really a steal. and his performance was so utterly brilliant and awe-inspiring, like many of his lyrics.

seeing him live was so amazing for me, because his music had really helped me cope with a lot of bad times. and if there was something about his music that i enjoyed, it is the sincerity that is packed into every word and sound, this desire to reach his listeners. and seeing him live really just brough across this sincerity like i've never felt before.

to a large extent, it was his concert, for his own sake. we just happened to be there. he kept saying that with the lighting system, he couldn't see the audience, but i suppose that was really what he wanted. on stage, he was just a man who had something to say. the whole set was acoustic, and it brought out more from every single one of those songs, some familiar and some new, than before.

for the very very last song he did, he stepped out from the light and walked right to the front of the stage, and did an old uncle tupelo (his first band) song totally unplugged. i had never heard it before, nor was the song spectacular, but after the whole concert, at the end of it all, he sang to us and it was beautiful. it must have been an amazing feeling, to sing before an audience songs that mattered to him.

and when i left i didn't feel anything. because it was his show, and all i did was listen to all these things he was singing to me. and that was amazing.
